Elderhostel program # 1415
15 days/14 nights
3 locations on the Big Island
|
Big Island of Hawaii offers geology, astronomy, Hawaiian history, marine life
and traditional and modern Hawaiian art and culture. Explore an erupting
volcano up-close, walk over cooled lava flows, pit craters, steam and sulfur
vents, lava tubes, and enjoy a sunset picnic on the newest land on earth in
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Field trips to National Parks on the
island's west side portray life in ancient Hawaiian times. Explore Hilo's
charm, from pre-missionary days to present. Step back in time to the days
of old Hawai`i in the seaside village of Kailua-Kona. Field trips include
a royal palace, the majestic church of the first Christian missionaries, and
ancient temple sites. Kona's warm ocean water hosts dazzling marine life.
THE BIG ISLAND OF HAWAI'I

Larger than all the other Hawaiian islands combined, the
Big
Island offers live volcanoes, tropical rainforests, 14,000' mountains,
deserts, white and black sand beaches, and incredible diversity of cultural
and natural history. Experience the unique beauty of three locations: At
Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, walk the newest land on earth and trek
through lush fern forests. In
Hilo on the
windward side, admire the lush tropical landscape, dramatic cliffs, and
waterfalls. On the west coast, marvel at glowing sunsets in the historic
village of Kailua-Kona. Lectures, demonstrations, hands-on experiences,
excursions, and day-long field trips bring alive the dynamics of this
oceanic, volcanic, and multi-cultural island. Program co-sponsored with
Volcano Art Center. |
