The history of Hawaii and Hawaiian language will be introduced in Hilo.  Field trip to Lyman Museum's unique collections and historic Mission House.  Excursions to Hawaii's North Coast and a public garden.  In Kailua-Kona, study Hawaii's ancient places; explore archaeological sites including Place of Refuge.  Study how missionaries and whalers shaped Hawaiian history.  Field trips to Lahaina, a picturesque seaside town with a lively past.  Bailey Museum, `Iao Needle and Maui Ocean Center.  On Kauai, study island agriculture with field trips to a guava farm and a sugar plantation.  On Oahu, learn about Hawaiian cultural history in lectures in the monarchy, use of plants and medicine, and hula.  Field trips to Bishop Museum and Punchbowl cemetery.  Excursion to USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor.

ITINERARY

Participants fly into Hilo Airport, on the east side of the Big Island; spend 5 nights in Hilo, 3 nights in Kailua-Kona; and fly out of Kailua-Kona Airport, on the west side of the Big Island to Maui; spend 4 nights on Maui; fly to Kauai, spend 3 nights; fly to Honolulu, spend 6 nights.  All inter-island airfare is included.  Free shuttle to hotel.

PROGRAM COST

$2,867 double occupancy; $3,812 single occupancy
includes room with private bath, on-island transportation, and 41 meals.
